A lot of times in our industry we get bogged down,
depressed, insecure because we are always looking at what “we are not” rather
then letting “who we are” shine through.
A wise nerd once told me and I quote:
“ Make sure your research doesn’t steal your own, unique
voice. Sometimes we look at too many different options and it paralyzes us.
“
~Chris Mclaughlin
Look Chris, I put one
of those little squiggly lines in front of your name! Doesn’t it look cool?
This principle has really impacted my journey as a
photographer. When I start to feel overwhelmed by all of the “I’m not”
thoughts, I remember what Chris told me. The words, “unique voice”, play over
and over in my head.
My favorite images are typically those that I categorize as “imperfectly
perfect”. Recently, I’ve been learning to be comfortable with my own voice as a
photographer. Now, I let the beauty I see stand alone.
I’ve adopted this motto in many areas of my life. Being a
busy, working mom, I’ve learned to let a lot of things go. My house isn’t
perfect, my kids aren’t spotless and my mind is a mushy mess most of the time! Its
“all-good”…life in its organized chaos is beautiful.
I'm happy I stopped by your beautiful blog and powerful thoughts here!

DeleteLinsey, thanks for sharing this good reminder with all of us. There is a quote I love (I don't know where it came from) that says: "Be yourself, everybody else is taken."
ReplyDeleteLove your blog too!
Thank you Nikki! Love that quote, another one for my office wall!
DeleteNicely said Linsey (or Chris I should say). This is my thought though... Everyone else is looking at YOUR amazing work thinking they want to be like YOU! :) Your amazing and I LOVE your photography. The best thing about you is you are uniquely you and you never try to be someone else. Never lose that quality! It's so great!
ReplyDeleteYou are so sweet and I can always count on you for an encouraging word! Thank you friend!
DeleteGorgeous, gorgeous photos on top!! I find the use "voice" for your lens interesting. I'm used to using "voice" for writing, but I never thought of that in terms of photography. I would have though the senses would correlate, as in, never lose your unique vision. Whichever term one uses, I agree!! Celebrate your own uniqueness!
ReplyDeleteThank you Tamara!
DeleteGood stuff, Linsey! Love the squiggly line!
ReplyDeleteDon't get a big head or anything, but it does look pretty cool!
DeleteYour photos are absolutely gorgeous!! I am a new follower :)
