Black Thumb

When it comes to gardening, or even just keeping a simple small potted plant alive, I fall very short. I am not sure what the deal is. Seriously, how hard is it to water a plant and stick it in the sun? But my track record shows, no matter how hard I try, I can't seem to make friends with the plant population!

My dad bought me this beautiful daisy plant. I desperately wanted to keep this little lady alive, but it was her time to go, I guess. Or that's what I tell myself so I don't have to face the fact that I didn't take proper care of her. She just didn't like me, that's all, and it's okay. Sometimes friendships just don't workout, it's not supposed to click with everyone!

I sadly said goodbye!!!

I now had this very cute, empty, depressing looking pot. When I mentioned to Erik that I needed to get another plant for the table, his response was harsh, but truthful. "it's just gonna die again honey, why don't you try a cactus!" Then he said, "it's not you honey, it's the altitude!" That poor altitude, gets blamed for a lot!! It was sweet of him to try and boost my confidence in a week area of mine, but the truth is, I couldn't grow anything in Virginia either!!

The next trip we made to Lowe's, I asked him to pick me up a plant he thought looked good. Being the sweet guy he is, he didn't object. I gave him free reign, I just said get something pretty!

I was in the car with the tired kids and he just ran in, we do this a lot. In fact sometimes when we don't have kids with us, out of habit, we will start to discuss who is going to run in. Then we realize, wait a minute, we can both go in!!

He did a good job, he came out with this beautiful flowering plant called a Digitalis. I got it home, planted it with love, and put it in it's new home on the dining room table. I was just hoping that Digitalis liked her location more that Daisy did!

It has been a few weeks and Digitalis is healthy, beautiful, and growing strong. So strong in fact, that I can't keep up with her. Everyday she looks taller! She seriously started out half the size she is now. With the chandelier bracing her rapid growth, we will see just how tall she gets!

I managed to make a friend! Who knows, this could be the beginning of me finally being accepted into this coveted social circle. If not, for now, me and Digi are happy and going strong. I won't get carried away with my plans for the future, lets just take it one day at a time.

Now, I know that this flower belongs outside and is not your typical table top plant one would choose. But she likes her home and I dare not disturb her. Besides, it's not my way to do things normal, maybe thats why we get along so well. I love my humungous dining room center piece, it's beautiful!!

If our friendship does continue, it will be because we fought for it. It is a constant battle to keep our relationship strong and healthy. But the best relationships are built on hardships and struggles.

During dinner, the kids thought it would be funny to vandalize her with noodles. Seriously, I don't know what comes over them sometimes. If she can survive in this wilderness, she can survive anywhere!!

  2. This so sounds like I could have written it. I bought beautiful flower pots (already done this year) for my front porch. They were gorgeous, but not so much today. I think I'm cursed. I actually killed a cactus once. haha. Found you thru Redhead Riter.

  3. I'm so jealous that you can keep these plants alive. I'm like Alicia, I killed a cactus too, actually several. That's pathetic! LOL

  4. I went through so many plants at one time in my life until I came across this one that I bought just because I thought it looked cool. I have had it now for 5 years and have purchased 3 others like it since. They seriously like to be ignored....it's crazy. Some are in the light some are in the dark, I water them frequently sometimes and other times go months without watering them. I see them in malls and in hospitals sometimes. They are called z plants which is short for Zamioculcas zamiifolia. I purchased my first at Lowes and then my others at Fred Meyer. I too have killed a cactus and even bamboo which are both supposed to be impossible to kill. Oh, and the leaves are always shiney and you never have to clean them too.

  6. Linsey, Your blog is so funny. My green thumb comes and goes. I think the digitalis is a bulb plant. If that is true you could put the bulb in a spot outside and it will come back when it's warm again. Then again I don't know what it's like to live in a higher altitude. Here it's super hot in the summer and dry all year old so they have to be very sturdy to grow in the sun.
